The Spark of an Idea

Our story for this project kicked off in 2018, and what a journey it’s been! We started receiving emails from passionate anglers on the hunt for something very specific: a jig head that was just a bit heavier than 1/32 ounce but still lighter than 1/16 ounce. With over 40 years of experience, we’ve learned that when a few dedicated fishermen ask for something, it means a whole community is thinking the same thing. We took that incredible insight to heart and immediately knew what we had to do—it was time to get to work on our next project!

The solution? A 1/24 ounce jig head! A 1/24 ounce jig head sits precisely between a 1/32 ounce and a 1/16 ounce.

The “In-Between” Weight Advantage

Standard weight jigs force a compromise. The 1/32 ounce may be too light, while the 1/16 ounce may be too heavy. The Panfishpro 1/24 ounce provides the perfect balance for a natural presentation.

The Prototype

At Panfishpro, we’ve been crafting jig heads for over 40 years, cultivating a loyal customer base, some of whom have been with us for decades. We also develop and manufacture jig heads for other companies, solidifying our expertise in the field.

Our manufacturing process begins with a prototype. For precision, we may opt for a single-cavity prototype mold, or for low-quantity production, we choose a multi-cavity prototype mold, which was the case for this new size.

The request for this new jig head specified a ball-shaped design, making the geometry straightforward to calculate. We determined the ideal diameter to be 0.23 inches. Instead of pure lead, we use a blend of white metals to achieve optimal manufacturing results and specific gravity.

Once we had a quantity of the 1/24 ounce jig heads, we distributed them to the anglers who had originally encouraged us to develop this product.

Furthermore, many testers reported a slightly quicker sink rate compared to the 1/32 ounce jig heads. While subtle, this accelerated descent proved advantageous in various fishing scenarios, particularly when targeting fish in deeper water columns or when a faster presentation was desired. This efficiency can be crucial in competitive fishing or when fish are less active and require a more immediate bait presence.

One individual in particular highlighted a design aspect that resonated strongly with him: the jig head’s diameter perfectly matched his preferred plastic baits. Following the development phase, we strategically launched the product with a curated selection of colors made available directly through our website. Up until this point, we had deliberately held back from committing to mass production. This cautious approach was rooted in a desire to thoroughly assess the product’s long-term viability and to avoid overextending our resources prematurely. However, the recurring shortages of the jig head led to an influx of inquiries from eager customers. While we pride ourselves on our commitment to customer service and diligently respond to each query with prompt and helpful replies, the volume of these interactions began to consume a significant amount of valuable time – time that could have been dedicated to other critical aspects of our business.

Navigating the Complexities of Growth: The Decision to Scale Up

The decision to elevate a product from a niche offering to a core, mass-produced item is never taken lightly. It introduces a cascade of challenges and considerations that demand careful planning and strategic execution. Among the foremost concerns is ensuring a consistent and sufficient supply of raw materials. Scaling up production for the 1/24 ounce jig head necessitated a reevaluation of our existing inventory management and procurement processes, not just for this new item but also for our entire product line. We had to guarantee that expanding production for one item wouldn’t inadvertently lead to shortages or delays for our established offerings.

Furthermore, integrating a new, high-demand product into an already tightly scheduled production pipeline presented its own set of logistical hurdles. Our existing manufacturing schedule, while evolving, is crafted to optimize efficiency across all our products. Carving out significant new blocks of production time for the jig head required a complete recalibration of our operational flow, involving adjustments to staffing, machinery allocation, and quality control processes.
